I have to begin by saying that I am so excited for my first beauty post! I certainly don’t consider myself a makeup expert, and I hope professionals out there won’t cringe reading through this. But why would I think about writing a post about makeup if I’m not an expert? Well, honestly I feel like I have a lot of relatable, average makeup woes.
I love watching makeup tutorials (Teni Panosian is my fave), but most of them aren’t realistic for me. They often use expensive products and their tutorials take about 15 minutes with fast forwarding. I don’t want to use 3 different mascaras to get the perfect lashes, and I don’t want to have to use a special primer for every part of my face. If you think I know how to contour or highlight you’re out of your mind! And I usually have less than 10 minutes to do makeup as part of my morning routine.
I started seeing makeup as an extension of my overall look, and over time I’ve found some affordable, easy-to-use, and reliable products that get me through my busy day, whether that’s at the office or running errands. So even though I’m not a makeup guru, I have learned a thing or two about what works for me as far as my budget and lifestyle is concerned, especially when it comes to lipsticks (3 out of 4 of my picks are under $5!).
You’ll notice in the photos that these lipsticks look like they’ve been around the block because I’m constantly taking them from one purse to another and back to my makeup drawer! So without further ado, here are my four favorite drugstore lipsticks that I think are perfect for the average girl.
These balm stains were my first experimentation with lip color around 2 years ago when brights were getting popular, and they’re still the best! I have 5 total and I love using them to add a little bit of fun to an outfit. They go on super smooth and have just the right amount of shine. I usually grab this smitten shade when I’m wearing black and white to make the look a little more youthful. These balm stains were so popular that Revlon came out with two new sets of crayon balms in matte and lacquer finishes. I haven’t tried them, though, because I love these ones so much!
If I had to pick a favorite out of all of these, this NYX lipstick in Milan is it. It’s the creamy texture, super low price point, and lovely pink shade that make it an all around winner. When I started taking blog photos I realized that when I didn’t have lipstick on I kind of looked like a zombie! You need to wear a little bit more for it to show up on camera. When I’m not looking for a standout lip color I always grab this one because it compliments my skin tone without trying to steal the show. Put simply, it just always looks nice. Another bonus is that NYX is a cruelty-free brand.
My mom always gives me Burt’s Bees products as stocking stuffers around the holidays and I will never ever ask her to stop! These lip shimmers are great because they go on really smooth and have a decent amount of color, and as the name suggests, shimmer to them. But not shimmer in the teeny makeup sense, but in the perfect glow sense. I like this plum shade for winter, and a great everyday shade is fig. I’m actually amazed that I used up an entire tube of it before losing it!
I like to wear a light peach lipstick when I wear navy blues, and it took me awhile to find a shade that was just right. Not too orangey or bright, this Revlon lipstick is just a lovely peach. It’s really easy to wear…no lipliner necessary. I bought another color, Rose Dew, and it was too frosty and shimmery, so make sure to swatch before you buy.
