If you didn’t know, I did a series this work week called 5 Days 5 Shades where I wore a different red lipstick each day and documented it on Instagram stories. I used drugstore and high end, old favorites and new purchases to find the best of the best when it comes to red lipwear. Because nothing is worse than being in a meeting and feeling paranoid about whether your lipstick looks okay, all the while having nothing you can do about it.
(Okay I can actually think of worse things, but I still really don’t like the lipstick paranoia feeling either)
All red lipsticks are not created equal, so here’s how each day turned out!
Day 1: Sephora Rouge Cream Lipstick
I started out the series with a brand new product, the Sephora Collection Rouge Cream Lipstick in ‘The Red.’ Call me old fashioned, but I am partial to just plain old lipstick. And if you’re a regular lipstick lover like me, I think you will be really pleased with this one
P.S. Whenever I wear red lipstick I use the Milani Color Statement Lipliner in ‘True Red’ to prevent feathering.
This lipstick is a true, bright red and the formula felt great on. Not sticky, not matte, not glossy, just a nice cream lipstick. And it lasted really well–through my morning coffee and breakfast burrito. I reapplied once after lunch and that was enough for the day.
While I did like this product a lot, there’s one thing I want to mention. This Sephora Collection Lipstick is very comparable to the NYX Extra Creamy Lipsticks, which are about half the price. I haven’t tried the NYX lipstick in red, so I can’t necessarily speak to how the color looks but I just wanted to throw that out there!
- Verdict: Great Buy!
Day 2: Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain
Tuesday I wore one of my absolute favorites, the Revlon Balm Stain in ‘Adore.’ I love the line of balm stains and actually own 4 different shades. They’re hydrating, easy to apply, and no fuss. I do reapply a few times throughout the day, but since this is a balm stain instead of a traditional lipstick, it wears away naturally (no red line around your lips), and I don’t need to apply precisely with a mirror. Just swipe on and go! It’s a great product for people who don’t like the hassle of normal lipstick.
They also have the Revlon Balm Stains in glossy and matte finishes if you want something with a different texture, but I prefer the normal formula. Isn’t this deeper red color great for fall?
- Verdict: Must Have
P.S. For my first beauty post I talked about my favorite drugstore lipsticks, and you can bet it included the Revlon Balm Stain! Check out the post here if you’re interested in more of my favorite affordable picks.
I read some reviews of this product online and they seemed promising, but my experience with the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Last Lip Color in ‘Infallible Red’ was anything but.
Here’s how the product is supposed to work: Apply the color to your lips and let it dry for about 2 minutes without pressing lips together. After, apply the balm on the other side of the wand to protect the color and nourish your lips (since the color is pretty sticky and dry). You’re supposed to reapply the balm throughout the day to keep everything looking flawless.
I followed the steps, but about an hour into my work day I realized that my lips were completely dried out and the product was flaking off. It didn’t look nice. So I wiped my lips clean and reapplied, thinking that I probably should have used a lip scrub the night before to make sure my pout was ready for a long-wearing lip color.
But then the same thing happened again a few hours later.
I don’t know if this product just isn’t for me, but it did not last 24 hours and it dried my lips out. Sigh. I’d love to know if anyone else has had a good experience with the L’Oreal Pro-Last Lip Color line, or if it’s just not worth anyone’s time. One positive thing I will say is that the color did not transfer much once I had it on, so you won’t be spreading lip color all over the rim of your drink or on other people.
- Verdict: Hard Pass
Day 4: MAC Liptensity
I don’t like to spend a lot on makeup. Most of my products are drugstore, with a few higher end ones thrown in here and there. I usually feel like you can get great products without spending half of your paycheck, but there are some I’m willing to splurge on. And the MAC Lipstensity in ‘Life’s Blood’ is one of those.
I love the pure, red color and the pigmentation is top notch. Since it is a lipstick, the color does transfer to my coffee mug, but it still lasts a really long time! I only reapplied once after lunch and I took this photo when I got home about 4 hours later. It’s pretty much the queen of red lipsticks!
And again, I did wear the Milani Color Statement Lipliner first to prevent feathering.
- Verdict: Great Splurge for Red Lip Lovers
Day 5: Sephora Rouge Tint
Sadly this Sephora Rouge Tint in ‘Red’ was not a winner. It goes on kind of glossy and dries quickly to give a stain type of look to your lips, which isn’t that bad in theory. That meant that the color looked more natural and didn’t transfer easily.
But there were a lot of negatives. It wasn’t a true red shade, but slightly pink, and it didn’t last long at all. I’m very used to rubbing my lips together throughout the day to make sure my lipstick is still spread everywhere, but with a product like this it actually rubs the product off, leaving you with uneven color.
It was worn off after lunch to the point that I didn’t even care to put it back on, and it won’t be a favorite of mine. Something I have tested before though is using it as a more intense version of a lipliner, where I apply it before my lipstick. It works okay, but doesn’t justify getting the product in my opinion.
What are some of your favorite lipsticks? I’d love to give them a try and maybe include them in a future post!
